A Smooth Ride Ahead: Expert Prevention and Treatment Tips for Motion Sickness

Embarking on a vacation should be an exhilarating experience, but for those of us prone to motion sickness, the journey can feel daunting. Motion sickness is a common condition triggered by repetitive movements which disrupt our inner ear’s balance system, leading to symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Although people often experience it during road trips (cars, vans, buses, trains), on the water (ships or boats), and in the air (planes), anything that involves motion can trigger it, including roller coasters. Fortunately, there are effective ways to prevent and treat motion sickness.

Over-the-counter (OTC) remedies, such as antihistamines (Dramamine, Bonine/meclizine), are widely used to both prevent and treat the symptoms. These are great for short trips or when symptoms are mild.

However, for longer durations or more severe cases, the scopolamine patch is a proven treatment. It is a prescription patch which when applied behind the ear, slowly releases medication to help prevent motion sickness for up to 3 days.

While it’s wonderful that there are treatments available for motion sickness, the best treatment is prevention. Here are several strategies that can help you avoid motion sickness.

✅️Focus on the Horizon: Keeping your gaze fixed on a distant point on the horizon can help stabilize your inner sense of balance, reducing symptoms of motion sickness.

✅️Choose Your Seat Wisely: On a boat, stay near the water’s surface and in the center, where motion is felt least. In a car, the front seat is preferable, and on a plane, sitting over the wings where there is less turbulence can help.

✅️Fresh Air: Ensure adequate ventilation or direct a vent towards you to breathe in fresh air, which can alleviate nausea and discomfort.

✅️Limit Reading and Screen Time: Focusing on stationary objects like books or screens can increase symptoms. Instead, look out the window or close your eyes to rest.

✅️Stay Hydrated and Eat Light: Drink plenty of water and consume light, bland foods before and during your trip. Avoid heavy, spicy, or fat-rich foods that can worsen nausea and avoid alcohol.

✅️Ginger: Ginger is a natural remedy that some find helpful in preventing motion sickness. It can be taken in various forms, such as ginger candies, biscuits, or tea.

✅️Acupressure: Wearing an acupressure wristband or manually applying pressure to the Nei-Kuan point on your wrist can help reduce symptoms for some individuals.

✅️Relaxation and Distraction: Engage in conversations, listen to music, or practice deep breathing to distract your mind and reduce the anticipation of motion sickness.

✅️Position Yourself Strategically: Try to position yourself in a way that minimizes your movement – this means sitting in the direction of travel and not twisting or turning frequently.

✅️Acclimate Yourself: If possible, spend some time getting used to the motion before your trip starts. On boats, spend some time on deck before departure to acclimate to the motion of the water.

These measures can be effective in reducing or preventing the discomfort of motion sickness, allowing you to enjoy your journey more comfortably. Now that you know what to do, don’t let the fear of motion sickness hold you back from exploring the world.
